Thanks to my many Mandarin (or Putonghua) speaking friends here in Hong Kong, I’ve become the lucky recipient of my very own Chinese name: 爱美丽. The characters represent phonetic approximations of my name’s sounds, Ei-Mei-Li.
Translation? Love, Beauty.
A very lucky and feminine translation for a girl’s name, I’m told. Hey, I’m not complaining. (Don’t ask me for my Cantonese name, though… which doesn’t sound or mean anything nearly as pretty).
Apparently Jane and Bob knew what they were doing when the picked such an “old-fasioned” name back in ‘84. Thanks guys!
